Ongoing: The Power in Art
Art is a powerful thing. It can act as a coping strategy, a way to feel connected with others, a way to access an emotion we may have tucked away, or a way to process an emotion that's feeling particularly strong. It can help us shift our focus to the present moment, or change our perspective on something we've been thinking about. It can remind us of our shared human struggles, help us feel less alone, and offer inspiration and energy. It might be a distraction, a skill, or it might simply be entertainment.
Take a moment now to reflect on how art plays a role in your life. What emotions might a painting, a song, or a dance evoke in you? Do you use art as a means of expression? What work of art or activity comes to mind for you when you reflect?
Although artistic expression can exist in numerous forms, one of the most powerful mediums for myself is through music. Whether it be the lyrics, the tone, or the instruments, songs can so often express a moving and beautiful depth of emotion.
Below I have listed some modern songs that express messages of struggle and hope. These songs are shared in an effort to help foster awareness and acceptance of expressing mental health struggles and to draw attention to our shared human experiences. They won't be to everyone's taste and their messages won't connect to everyone, but I believe they are worth sharing just in case they do.
Please keep in mind that since music can sometimes have a strong impact on our internal world, listening to any of these songs might bring about a strong emotional reaction. Although giving yourself space to feel what you feel can certainly be a healthy way to process your emotions, please be sure you are in a position to hear music that addresses difficult topics related to mental health before clicking below. If you find things start to feel overwhelming, end the video and take the appropriate steps to take care of yourself.
